On October 30th, 2023, Balenciaga will open in South Coast Plaza, the largest
shopping center on the West Coast of the United States, situated in Costa Mesa,
California.
The two-story space spans 900 square meters and offers the latest in Balenciaga men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, shoes, bags, accessories, eyewear, and jewelry. Two entryways face the mall’s polished interiors on two separate levels, setting a contrast between the store and its surroundings. The interior design follows the brand’s experiential Raw Architecture concept, conceived to question the nature of authenticity by leaving surfaces intentionally raw and adding evocative details like simulated corrosion or rough edges. These builds and renovations respect existing structures, exposing their inner workings and accumulated histories. The resulting stores inherently use fewer virgin materials.

Brushed concrete floors resemble sidewalk tiles, while walls and shelving units are paneled with stained and aged concrete as well, creating the illusion of a liminal indoor/outdoor space. -

Ceiling grids, industrial lighting systems, and other technical fixtures are exposed overhead. -

Aluminum tables, hanging racks, and faux leather benches are patinated and worn to simulate warehouse fixtures. -
